Our founder

1974 - 2018

Manuel Cauich Uitzil “Manuel Chac” was a fisherman of Mayan origin who founded Casa Viejo Chac and for many years gave a special experience to our clients.

Manuel Chac came from a small Mayan town called Polyuc, where he was a woodcutter in his childhood. When he became an adolescent, he traveled to the Sian Ka’an Reserve to become a fisherman and married Elsy Ruby León Chavez. He started to work as a fly fishing guide at the age of 20 and many years later he met Greg DeJulio. Together they started to work on the idea of starting a fly fishing lodge and eventually they decided on the name Casa Viejo Chac, to pay tribute to Manuel’s Father. Casa Viejo Chac literally translates to “House of Old Man Chac”. Ruby continues to operate the lodge at the same high standards Manuel envisioned.
